Parasite Cleanse FAQ:

Hi,

I think my Black Moor has a parasite and swim bladder problem. I recently put him in a 10 gallon tank for treatment. What works better- treating him using anti-parasite fish food or using a specific type of medication?

If the fish is still eating, and it’s an internal parasite, I’d opt on the side of the medicated food– this will more effectively deliver the medication to the infection. If it’s an external parasite, medicated food will have very little affect, and a malachite green + formalin based medication like Quick Cure or Rid Ick would work much better. Also, water conditioners are NOT medications, and there are no “water conditioners” marketed for treating Ich– those are called medications.

What kind of parasite and what does it look like? External parasites like ich or flukes should be treated with liquid meds poured directly into the tank. Remember if you noticed the parasites while he was in the larger tank, you may want to treat that tank as well and avoid the risk of both tanks being contaminated. There are tell tail signs of internal parasites and then I would use medicated food.

As for the swim bladder, peas or lettuce will do the trick.
