Parasite Cleanse FAQ:

Specifically, I am interested in a parasite that affects bears after they eat the infected salmon. Please refrain from “helping” by telling me to ask my teacher, look it up on google, go to the library, etc. unless you have a specific book/keywords to recommend that you KNOW has the answer.
Thanks

Hmmm… a DRIP? These are fungus-like parasites that usually affect the tail fin.

salmon poisoning or “Neorikettsia helmithoeca” or “Neorickettsia elokominica” are rickettsialbacteria that harbor the disease vector, metacercariae of a fluke(worm/parasite) called “Nanophyetus salmincola” Mechanism of action is complex, however 5- 7 days after ingestion, fluke matures and rickettsia cause severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and invade bloodstream….i.e sepsis and possible toxic shock.

Salmon tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium dendriticum) affects bears, humans, and other vertebrates. It is contracted from eating raw or undercooked salmon flesh. Hope this helps.

The answer in Nanophyetus salmincola. It is the parasite that infects salmon. It really isn’t the parasite itself that causes the “salmon poisioning” but instead it is the bacteria that it introduces called Neorickettsia helminothoeca into the host (bear, human, etc.). This disease can cause “fish flu” in humans and is common in the North western United states.
